i woke up super early this morning in a pretty good mood.
penciled some new pages, for a new series (talk about that later in the week)
then packed my stuff, and dashed off to ACC (atlanta comicon) [link]
one of my favorite 1 day comic conventions.
why? it's local, usually has a good crowd that comes out for it, it happens about 4 times a year, it's 30 minutes drive from where i am right now,
and best of all the tables are FREE! XD
or... they used to be.
this was a weird day. first of all, when i contacted the guys who run the show a month in advance as usual,
they told me they were all filled up. "that's odd " i thought, they're never full this far in advance of a show.
but they told me to come by anyways since i'm one of the regular guests at the show for... a couple years now.
and if they had any no shows i could get their table.
usually there are about 2 or 3 no shows. i don't know why... it's a free show... er was a free show.
so i'm at the show this morning, talking to the guy because it's set up time and only one guy has shown up so far (artists) haha
but as we're talking he says, "yah i had expected these guys to show up on time, considering they paid in advance."
pause...
"paid?"
he then informs me then and there, that this wonderful 1 day convention in a pretty hotel ballroom, that has been free for artist for over a decade
is now $25 a table.
O_O ~earth shattering...
you know... i wouldn't even mind if
1. i had been made aware of the fact they were changing to pay tables at the last show in december, or via email in the last month
2. i had $25 to pay for a table (which i don't. seriously, i'm typing this with my moms borrowed laptop and using her wifi) sad.
3. i had ever even made $25 at one of those 1 day shows.
the most i've ever made at one of the ACC shows is $11, which i was fine with considering it was free table.
i don't know... it's kind of sad. i understand their reasons, i wish they had maybe settled on a price like 15 or 10 not 25 :C
so here i am back at "home", having spent my last $2 on a thing of peanut butter. which i will eat while i draw some pages for munch chunky, goblyn and a super secret comics project (or two)
poo...
that show was always fun. a lot of us local guys were regulars there, i didn't see any of them on the new guest list they posted.
guess everyone kinda' felt the same.
i wish them the best in the rest of the year. maybe i'll see them at a later show. maybe.
in the mean time... i'm looking for other free 1 day shows or cheaper ones.
any suggestions?

oh well... i just have to find another free artist alley con, or start saving up now for the next one they have in spring. haha aww... poop.
it's like i did REALLY well at awa, but then the rest of the year it was like less than 25 at any one show. no matter the size. it's a long hard road, but i'm gonna' be careful where i step.
i'll prolly only do 1 or 2 big shows a year (ones that i know i'll do well at) and a bunch of little shows from month to month like college anime shows and stuff. but big shows for the most are only good for showing up at like a regular attendee and passing out flyers for your own work. and even that's hard because people forget or toss them if it's too early in the day. D:
i dunno' tho dude... you're in convention country now haha a lot of shows happening all along the coast there... i wonder tho... how expensive they are. even the little ones. :/ hrm...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! wooooooooooooo.
yeah, fuck that. i have no interest in losing $100 on a Saturday.
there's APE, but that's up in San Fran. the trip itself will negate any money i might make. and as for LA shows, well they might be good. i haven't done too much research. but i'm sure the prices won't be much better than the one day Long Beach show.
i'm considering volunteering for SDCC so i can get in for free. but then i'd have to find a hotel room, which is a nightmare in and of itself.
gawd! that's just too much.
i would only pay on that if i knew without a doubt i could make it back plus in a day.
D:
how do they justify that price for a single day?
oooh yah, volunteer at sdcc
man, i wanna go up to emrald city comicon.
i kinda wanna go to stumptown but i hear that's expensive too, right?
haha
i might have to disagree with you to some degree on that one.
I've had a table at SDCC 2 years in a row in the past.
it's a big show very exciting, but traffic for indy guys is low.
everyone is looking at the well known creators and the stars. the spectacle.
not the up and comers. plus it's expensive to get the table, travel fare, and hotel.
currently my only income is from my art, which doesn't sell as much as i would like.
i lost my apartment because i don't bring in enough money.
but i do really well at small shows because they are more personal, people really get the chance to stand there and talk to the artist which is something you can't really do at a big con with crowds of people. a free con (free for the artist, not the regular attendees) is even better because it means any money i make is pure profit. i don't have to worry about if i make back the money i spent on the table.
i'm not new at the convention scene, i've been behind the tables since 1998... that's how i came to like smaller shows more than big shows. you have to filter out all the nonsense every now and then. a big show doesn't mean big results, in either exposure or financial profit.
